Bed Bug infestations are up 5000% in the U.S.!
We have a problem. It turns out that part of the blame for the huge resurgence of bed bugs is due to the banning of DDT and other toxic chemicals. Banning these chemcals is a good thing, right? Sure it is. it's healthier. Its better for the environment but..... Bed bugs!!
Pest control Companies are working hard to find a subtitute chemical that will be effective but so far , they commonly use D. phenothrin which is only marginally effective and bed bugs have shown to have adapted genetically. D.phenothrin can be used used with steam which increases it's effectiveness. Steam requires close application, sufficient heat, and slow progress to be effective. This solution must be performed by a professional and costs upwards of a thousand dollars.
Those of us that dont want to use chemicals have some options.
Heat will kill bedbugs. There are companies that will Heat an infested area to 120 degrees and maintain that temperature for several hours. Heat must penetrate all mattresses furniture etc... In order to do this the company will run flexible ducts into every area in the house. The heated air coming out of those ducts is typically 140 degrees. This treatment will run thousands of dollars.
A new formulation of a very old treatment is proving very effective.
Cedar Oil has been recognized by the EPA as a natural, safe pest treatment।
Cedar oil has been used since the dawn of time. Our pioneer anscestors used cedar sawdust on the floors of their cabins to repel all types of pests. Cedar oil causes bed bugs to close there breathing pores and the bugs actually kill themselves in a matter of seconds. This is important because other chemicals kill, but take days sometimes. Meanwhile the bug lays eggs and the infestation continues. Cedar oil kills bugs, eggs and larvea immediately.
Not all Cedar solutions are equal. The formulation is important. It best to deliver the Cedar oil in a fine mist in order to reach all of the crevices in which Bed Bugs will hide. The bed bugs inhale the mist, causing them to close off their breathing holes. This causes a rapid drop in body temperature which kills the bug in seconds. The formula also kills eggs, and larvea by causing dehydaration. Thr rapid kill is important. With chemicals, a targeted bug may live for hours before sucumbing, during which time it may still lay eggs and continue the infestation.
The best formulation I've found is coincidently called "Best Yet" from Cedar Oil Industries.
